Need help converting .sit to .ico

Oct 5, 2005 10:33 PM by Discussion: WinCustomize Talk
Well, Ive tried converting Mac icons into Windows icons (.sit into .ico) before, with StuffIt Expander, but wasnt successful. Instead of Windows files, I ended up with more Mac files. The 'tutorials' I looked at while attempting this were outdated for the new or specific app.

If, by chance, someone knows how to do this, has the current version, and has some time to walk me through it...I would be most appreciative.

A few weeks ago I modded a skin into a SysMetrix skin. Let me say that, after not doing a Sysmetrix skin in a while, I forgot how fun it was. Okay, I had the skin set up to read/display the hexadecimal values from under the cursor. Last week I noticed a tiny glitch. I thought it was happening with only my skin, but this is happening with all of the skins with this feature. No matter which color it reads, the value always starts off with '0X'. Also, this is with the lastest build.

What should I do to slap SM around

Hardware or trojan

Jul 20, 2005 10:31 PM by Discussion: PC Hardware
Hopefully my PC in online for good again.

Two weeks ago, my HP (XP) shut itself down for no apparent reason. I had a 7Mb file that I was working on in PS, plus notepad to jot down some notes. I minimized both windows, went to the bathroom, came back to open up notepad again, and poof - hard shutdown.

I tried the power button again. Fans kicked on, HD started spinning, beeps, lights...the normal things. Once my screen ticked (as if it were turning on to show boot process), it would do a hard shutdown again. I finally ended up removing the side and front covers to clean the inside (clean, dry towel of course) and to check for loose connections. Tried power button again...same-o.

Eventually, a neighbor and I were looking at it, and came to the conclusion that it must've been a short in the power button wires (about the only wires not checked). If I played with the wires, I could 'work' between 20 minutes and four hours at a time.

About 3-4 days ago, 2 things happened. (1) I noticed that the ground wire appeared farther from its connector than the others - so I pushed it closer. (2) Norton AV found a trojan hours later (loader.exe), so I quarantined it.

Everything seems to be running fine again. With both happenings occurring in the same day, Im still not sure what the problem was. Plus, after a week of family visiting as well, Im back to skinning. Hopefully from all this info, someone can give some insight about this (more like hardware problems, or 'just' an infection?).

I finally broke down and bought a WinCustomize subscription. An error occurred after entering billing information, though. Is there anyone available tonight to sort this out - so that I know whether it went through, or if I need to do it again?

Thanks

Never could get the weather docklet to work properly. I'll click it to enter my zip code, then it takes about 5 minutes before it says Weather Information Unavailable. Ive tried zip and code.

Also, I just downloaded OD last week to try it out. (I have SysStats 2.5 installed in AveDesk folder, too)

What am I missing?

need additional assistance

Mar 28, 2005 10:54 PM by Discussion: Windows XP
I spent this weekend repairing a friends Dell. A family PC with 5 accounts. Quick background: someones brother came over and went to an adult site. The only security was Nortons Anti-Virus - and some kind of pop-up blocker (Defender?). And no, the guy didnt make recovery CDs either. Well, this wasnt how I was planning the repair, but...

Here's the story:
First thing I did was get rid of any malicious desktop shortcuts and their related program files. Secondly, I scanned the system. From there, I fine-tuned the settings in Internet Properties and in the Control Panel.

All was well, until I tried running a Disk Cleanup. The PC didnt like that idea. So, I went to My Computer and noticed that 24Gb out of 38 was available. It would start off fine and would get up to 3 progress bars and then not seem to do anything else. Each time I ran it, the Windows Task Manager would verify it was running, and the CPU load would vary between 81 and 99%. (So much for starting with a clean slate... )

From being in the Add/Remove Programs screen, I noticed that there were only a handful of updates on the PC. I tried running Windows Updates to see what I wanted to install - but they didnt want to install. (Moving along... )

Spybot was onboard, so I updated and ran it, only to find around 900 discrepancies. I suggested using Mozilla Firefox over IE6, so that was installed. After that, I downloaded Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Active@Eraser, CWShredder, and a firewall.

Before anything else, I kept noticing WSEM Update. Curious, I searched for this on Google, and it led me to a Symantec security response. Cool, off to the registry I go. One thing led to another and I fixed several items in there. (Of course, I ran their recommended tool as well.) After doing what I have done, and considering what layed ahead, I went into Disk Defrag. It analyzed the system and didnt recommend a defrag, but I did one. (I ran Spybot again since I had to go online.)

I installed, updated, and ran Lavasoft Ad-Aware to find over 1500 problems - but - it also found a virus (with the help of Norton). I cleaned the files up and clicked on the Bloodhound.Exploit.6 link on the Nortons pane. Supposedly it would go away if I could get the Windows Updates to work. From what I read, it 'wasnt that harmful'. By this time (8:30 pm on a Sunday), I decided to install the Zone Alarm firewall.

Eraser and CWShredder were installed. I ran the latter only to find that the PC was reported as okay (before running Lavasoft). All in all, it may not have been the ideal way, but you can sure tell a difference.

Problems/questions:
1) If someone could point me to a link, or explain my Windows Update difficulties...that would be great.

2) Anyone have a better clue than me why the Disk Cleanup wouldnt work, or how I can help it along? This really stumped me.

3) What else would be suggested to do, that I may have overlooked?

Thanks!
